Sepsis and septic shock has become one of the major causes of hospital mortality in the last few years. Th is is a devastating condition with extremely high mortality rates. Despite early recognition, fl uid resuscitation, organ support and antimicrobial treatment the mortality is between 20-50%, depending on the study population. Due to its complex pathophysiology, the clinical picture in sepsis is remarkably heterogeneous.
To reduce the mortality of this condition, several studies were conducted. In sepsis, the host response to an infectious insult becomes dysregulated, and cytokines, chemokines and other inflammatory regulators are released leading to an imbalance between the pro- and anti-infl ammatory forces. One of the most promising fi eld is immunomodulation, is the modulation of the host’s response to the infection via extracorporeal blood purifi cation technologies. Deeper understanding of early immune response and the mechanism behind ’cytokine storm’ in sepsis could lead to new therapeutical methods and reduced mortality. Th e purpose of the current manuscript is to give a brief summary of the state-of-the-art in the fi eld
